Protecting God's Children (PGC)

PROTECTING GOD'S CHILDREN " is a three-hour workshop designed to provide factual information about child sexual abuse in organizational settings. By providing participants with and understanding of abuse, they will be able to actively participate in prevention efforts.

A step-by-step process to prevent child sexual abuse in organizational settings is outlined and discussed. This nation-wide program was developed after careful analysis of situations that have occurred in churches and church-related programs of many faiths.

In addition to participating in the workshop, all church employees--both lay and religious-- and volunteers who work with children must undergo a criminal background check. All catechists, hall monitors, principals ,and adult classroom aides must participate in this program.

The Faith Formation Office strongly recommends that all parents of school age children participate in "Protecting God's Children"

AWARENESS IS ONE STEP TOWARDS PREVENTION

empowering god's children

As caring adults, we have the great responsibility of ensuring the safety of children and youth. The prevention of child sexual abuse requires more than adult awareness, education, and training about the nature and scope of the problem. We must also give children and youth the tools they need to help us keep them safe by educating them regarding boundaries, safe and unsafe behaviors and healthy relationships. Empowering God’s Children® is an age-appropriate comprehensive program through which educators (teachers, catechists and youth ministers) and parents can give children and youth the tools they need to protect themselves and what to do if someone tries to violate their boundaries. All materials are available in English and Spanish.  Information about implementation of this program will be forthcoming.
